Dollar Lake, NS –JUNIOR YOUTH GET GREEN

A site at the Dollar Lake Provincial Park as long as two football fields was the four-day home of twenty-eight junior youth from the Atlantic Region, three directors, seven group leaders and an excellent support staff of five. The inspiration comes from the Ruhi Institute’s Appreciation For Nature Ecological Camps for Baha’í Junior Youth Groups. The theme and course work, “Let’s save the Earth” was a great success. It was the first annual Eco-Camp organized by the Junior Youth Planning Committee (JYPC) of Halifax RM

“Hmm, that ‘Magic Spot’ was unique.” -J.LB

Three special guest presenters gave workshops on ecology, drawing and painting and the history of living things by investigating fossils of various plants and animals.

“The scavenger hunt was hard and so exciting!” -S.S

Some of the highlights included finding trees while being blindfolded. The challenge was to remember how to get back to that tree by sense of direction and feel. Seeing plants that were millions of years old was fascinating and everyone learned a little about the science behind archeology and how it can pinpoint where and when something lived and died. After a long day of walking and learning, lights out at 10 p.m. was a good thing.

“The stars were beautiful.” -S.C

On the third day there was a camper warning from the conservation officer that there had been bear sightings (a mother and her cub), so there was no lack of excitement.

“The bears were scary; and I loved the campfire and dawn prayers.” -F.A

“Soccer. It Rules!” -D.LB

Many of the photos didn’t yet make it to the Gallery. With more contributions it can truly reflect the Eco-Camp experience.
Photos were taken by many of the campers and I know of at least two videos that were taken. Wouldn’t it be great if they were added to the gallery?

Jack Johnson is making a positive change.

In 2005, the Johnson’s, along with their crew, MusicMatters, and the leading environmental scientists developed the EnviroRider, an environmental handbook presenting eco-friendly options and actions for the various components of tour production (coordination, travel, venues, etc.). Since its 2005 release, the EnviroRider has been used by hundreds of artists and tours to date, quickly becoming the industry’s guide to green touring.

Jack Johnson gets Two Thumbs Up.

Jack Johnson and Friends singing Upside Down from the album Sing-a-Longs and Lullabies for the movie Curious George, give a musical voice to the mute, but inquisitive monkey. Thematic of the movie’s main character and young audience; the 3 R’s s educate us about the environment while singing and the value of friendship. It is fun to listen to. You can’t help yourself from tapping your feet or thrumming the arm of the chair or just singing along. Really!

“Jack Johnson keeps his regular-dude croon friendly and extra-bright on this tidy, quietly pretty soundtrack to the new kids’ film.”-Chrstian Hoarde, RollingStone.com

“Jack Johnson is one of the best easy listening artists currently. He has great music, and will appeal to all easy listeners on different levels.” -Trendy, MP3.com
